BELIZE BEACH VILLAS

Not a narrow beach, flanked by other crowded beaches, nor steps from a beach. Ours is a pristine, sandy beach, broad and deep, and directly on the Caribbean. Not just rooms, but centrally air-conditioned villas of distinction, with spacious bedrooms and lofts, fully equipped kitchens, 60-channel satellite television, a phone and safe, daily maid service and private terraces facing the sea. Lushly landscaped, the complex has a swim-up and sit-down bar, submerged lounges, a lap area and hot tub. Guests love it and many never leave it.Not a shared or "by-the-book" island dock, but a broad dock stretching 250 feet into the Caribbean, home to a fully-staffed Activities Center providing information and making arrangements for more than 30 tours and excursions on and off the island, and on the mainland, with pickups by guides right at dockside -- diving, snorkeling and fishing trips definitely included, along with cave tubing, Mayan ruins exploration, catamaran sails, and every conceivable water sport. Not a so-so restaurant with a limited menu, but an exceptional, just renovated restaurant/sports lounge named The Upper Deck, with dramatic 360-degree views, room service, and three meals a day, seven days a week, served up by a chef who routinely earns as much praise from our guests as our world-class pool environment. Not a costly rental fee for kayaks (they are free), nor for our bicycles (just $5 daily), nor for wi-fi access to the internet (it's free, with computers also available for your use in the lobby), nor for volleyball time, nor for play on our first-class tennis court. Not an isolated resort far from the "action." And on your arrival day, we will meet you in San Pedro and escort you to your villa, on our boat, at our cost, and return you to San Pedro on your departure day. PREFACE

The fact that Kalkan has not yet been discovered by hordes of package tourists gives it a sort of exclusivity. Opposite Kalkan in the picturesque bay, Club Patara and Patara Prince offer added exclusivity of a different kind.
When the complex was built eight years ago it attracted architectural interest worldwide - and no wonder. As you enter, you immediately notice the extensive use of the local stone and design sympathetic to the shape of the land sometimes going so far as to build around natural rock features.
In addition some design echoes local antiquities, the most ambitious of which is a replica of the first century AD Roman triumphal arch that stands in Patara itself some kilometres down the road to the west.
Club Patara is ambitiously styled on a Roman town. Walking through the stone arches to the marble- floored Agora built around a fountain is like stepping back in time, but the strange mix of traditional Turkish, reproduction Roman and openly modern works surprisingly, well and belies Club Patara's actual modernity, giving the place a feel as old as the rocks themselves.
But it's not only a case of good looks. Club Patara have got the luxury element so perfectly sown up that representatives of the tourist trade flock from all over the world, anxious to see how it's done.
This was the vision of one of Turkey's top architects, who sought to combine aesthetic value with practicality. The design is attractive, but throughout it makes the most of the hillside setting, providing little nooks of cool shade and spreading platforms on which to toast yourself in the sun.
The platforms are scattered along the water's edge, close to where the scheduled water taxi to Kalkan shuttles back and forth. Here also is the watersports center, which includes a diving school.
In addition there are facilities for water skiing, banana rides, windsurfing, fishing and sailing. Also close to the jetties - but discreetly away - from the hotels and villas - is the Apollonia night club, where, if you have not exhausted yourself with the day's activities, you can dance and drink till the small hours.
There are four swimming pools within Club Patara. The indoor pool and jacuzzi forms part of the fitness center, which also has a gymnasium, sauna, Turkish bath and massage facility.
The larger outdoor pool is for the whole family, the circular outdoor pool with its splendid cascading waterfall feature, is for adults only. The fourth pool situated near the tennis courts and features a skimming water slide. There is also a supervised club for children aged between four and ten years, to help channel that youthful activity which even Mediterranean sun cannot sap. Meanwhile the grown ups get on with some serious peace and quiet.
Close to the swimming pools are the main a la carte restaurant and the Patara bar, while around the Agora are the Agora Bar and restaurant, as well as the Bezirgan Turkish Restaurant.
For truly fine Turkish dining, the a la carte restaurant provides a wonderful open air section close to the water's edge beneath a charming thatched roof. Seafood is the barbecue speciality here.
The Bezirgan is the al fresco restaurant serving international and Turkish cuisine from a tempting open buffet.
If you have a taste for pizza and pasta the Italian restaurant offers an excellent selection. You can dine on the Agora or inside in a air-conditioned comfort.
At lunchtimes there is also a poolside barbecue serving delicious charcoal-grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, while in the evening you can enjoy live music in the piano bar close to the adult swimming pool.
With a bakery on site, you can choose from a selection of delicious frech loaves, roll and croisants served at breakfast.
The Patara Prince is a truly remarkable place, a holiday destination in its own right, more a town than a hotel, a community which gives you the freedom to socialise or to shut yourself away.

Where is Ephesus?

Ephesus is discovered in Selcuk, Izmir in western Turkey.Kusadasi is 19 km. far away from Ephesus and Pamucak beach is 5 km far away from Ephesus.
Ephesus / Turkey"Click on the small map to see the enlarged size"
The original site of Ancient Ephesus was most likely established on the Aegean coast, on the shores of that sea which is today located 8 km. away from the archaeological excavations.
Over the centuries, in fact, the rubble brought on to the plain of the "Kucuk Menderes" has enlarged the alluvial plain surrounding the archaeological zone, leaving behind in actual fact the shores of the Aegean. In Roman times it was situated on the northern slopes of the hills Coressus and Pion and south of the Cayster (Kucuk Menderes) River, the silt from which has since formed a fertile plain but has caused the coastline to move ever farther west. In Roman times a sea channel was maintained with difficulty to a harbor well west of Pion. By late Byzantine times this channel had become useless, and the coast by the mid-20th century was three miles farther west.
Ephesus (Efes) is close to the town of Selcuk about an hour drive south of Izmir. Kusadasi is the nearest larger town, about 20km from Ephesus.
Location:Ephesus was constructed on a river bend, that was eventually dredged into a full harbor near the mount of the Cayster River, on the western coast of Asia Minor (modern Turkey). Along the coastal plain between Smyrna to the north and Miletus to the south, the site is now about six miles from the Aegean Sea. The city shifted in five distinct locations over time, each within a small area. The Apostles Paul and John were familiar with the city that scholars have dubbed "Ephesus III" the largest (in area) of the five.
The areas where Ephesus located on as follows: Ephesus I: Aya Suluk (St. John Area); Ephesus II: Artemission area; Ephesus III: Port of St. Paul: base of Mount Koressos;Ephesus IV: north of Aya Suluk; Ephesus V: Selcuk area.
Because of the man-made harbor structure and the flow of the river, a backwash flow caused the harbor to frequently silt up (by 449 BCE we already read of problems documented about the silting. Later, Eusebius records that Ephesus honoured Emperor Hadrian for dredging and making navigable the harbor). When cleared, Ephesus was in a location that justified a great seaport. The city sat at the convergence of three land routes with a shipping lane from the north via the channel created by the Island of Chios and an opening facing the cities of Macedonia. The land routes that converged on Ephesus included: 1) The Colossae / Laodicea road (traveling east), 2) The road to Sardis and Galatia (northeast), and 3) The Smyrna (north) main road.
Population: Some scholars estimate the number of people living at Ephesus to have exceeded 250,000 inhabitants during Ephesus III, which would make it perhaps the fourth largest of its day behind: 1) Rome; 2) Alexandria; and 3)An Antioch. This large a city was an economic stronghold in Asia Minor, and justified the title supreme metropolis of Asia though there is an evidence that its overall economic standing may have been slowly declining.

EPHESUS

Ephesus which was established as a port, was used to be the most important commercial centre. It played a great role in the ancient times with its strategic location. Ephesus is located on a very fertile valley.
Ephesus, once, the trade centre of the ancient world, a religious centre of the early Christianity and today, Ephesus is an important tourism centre in Turkey.
The ancient city Ephesus is located in Selcuk, a small town 30km away from Kusadasi.

Basilica of St John

It is believed that the evangelist St. John had spent his last years in the region around Ephesus and buried in the southern slope of Ayosolug Hill. Three hundred years after the death of Saint Paul, a small chapel was constructed over the grave in the 4th century. The church was changed into a marvelous basilica during the region of Emperor Justinian (527 -565 AD).
The monumental basilica was in the shape of a cross and was covered with six domes. Its construction, being of stone and brick, is an extremely rare find amongst the architecture of its time. Raised by two steps and covered with marble, the tomb of St John was under the central dome, that was once carried by the four columns at the corners. The columns in the courtyard reveals the monograms of Emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora. Constructed in the 5th century AD, the baptistery is north of the nave, with its key hole shape. Rampart walls around the church were constructed for protection from the Arabian attracts in the 7th - 8th centuries AD. The impressive 10th century AD frescoes representing St John, Jesus and a Saint, ornament the chapel. With the invasion of Turks, the chapel was used as a mosque in the 14th century; unfortunately Basilica of Saint John became unusable due to the serious earthquake in the same century.
The excavations around the Basilica of Saint John has been continuing under the supervision of Ekrem Akurgal since 1973, with the financial supports of George B. Quatman.

Pamukkale, Cotton Castle of Turkey

Pamukkale, which means 'Cotton Castle' in Turkish, is known as 8th world wonder by Turkish people. Pamukkale is a natural site and a famous tourist attraction in south-western Turkey in the Denizli Province. Pamukkale is located in Turkey's Inner Aegean region, in the River Menderes valley, which enjoys a temperate climate over the greater part of the year. The summers are hot and dry, and winters warm and rainy. Tourists travel from the coast of Antalya and the Aegean Sea to Pamukkale.

Pamukkale by SunsetThe water (35 degrees Celsius) which is flowing down the cliff of Pamukkale has turned the area into as white as cotton color, and carved this fantastic formation of stalactites and basins. Pamukkale is a very popular destination for a short visit, the stunning white calcium pools, which cling to the side of a ridge, have been long one of the most famous picture postal card views of Turkey. It is the largest and finest example of elaborate calcium formation in the world, which dominates the landscape miles around. Pamukkale was formed when a spring with a high content of dissolved calcium bicarbonate cascaded over the edge of the cliff, which cooled and hardened leaving calcium deposits. This formed into great natural pools, shelves and ridges, which tourists could plunge and splash in the hot water. According to ancient tradition, the waters within the pools are said to be advantageous in treating maladies and attracting people from all over the world. The calceous waters rise from the ground at a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius. In this white wonderland is an abundance of hot warm springs which are recommended for the treatment of high blood pressure, heart diseases, rheumatism, circulatory problems, nervous disorders, digestive maladies, nervous and physical exhaustion, eye & skin diseases and nutritional disorders.

Hotels were springing up from the 1970s to cater for the large influx of tourists, and shortly afterwards UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. But by the 1990s, this took its toll on the state of the calcium pools and restrictions were placed on these travertine terraces. Many hotels were knocked down, visitors are only allowed on major paths around the sites, and must remove footwear to stand on the calcium deposits. This seems to have been a successful move, as the water supply is now used for preservation and some of the damaged calcium deposits have been strengthened.

As you approach the site of Pamukkale / Hierapolis from Denizli, a long white smudge along the hills to the north suggests a landslide or open cast mine. Getting closer, this resolves into the edge of a plateau, more than 100m higher than the level of the river valley and absolutely smothered in white travertine terraces. Some are shaped like water lilies, other like shell - bathtubs with stalagmite feet, with simplest ones resembling bleached rice terraces out of an oriental engraving.

Hierapolis, Sacred City of PamukkaleThe ruins of Hierapolis are the other main attraction. The city was founded in 190 B.C. by Eumenes II, king of Pergamon. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it reached the height of its development as a Roman thermal bath center. Hierapolis has such extensive ruins which is suggested : the city walls, the octagonal Martyrium of St. Philip, the 2nd center theater, Temple of Apollo, basilica then the necropolis which covers 2 km. and contains some of the best examples of tomb styles; it is one of the best-preserved cemeteries in all of Anatolia. The East Bath is in archaeology museum housing many of the remains from Hierapolis.

Just outside Pamukkale are the Red Springs, the boiling waters of which have emerged from thousands of feet below the Earth's surface to form ribbons of deep red, blue and yellow on the surrounding rocks.

The city of Ancient Thera

In the early of eighth century B.C. when Dorieis colonists arrived in the island, possibly Spartiates, with their leader Theras, founded the settlement which took their leader’s name in the steep, embattled peak of Mesa Vouno, which is a hill (385 meters) that belongs to the pre volcano core of the island and predominates in its southeastern end.

Cobbled streets in Sellada’s slopes, the sol that unites the hill with the mountainous bulge of Prophet Elias in the northwest, were connecting the city with the coastal territories in the foothill of Mesa Vouno where its seaport settlements Oia in the north (Kamari) and Eleysis in the south (Perissa) were founded. Today, Sellada offers once again the access to the archaeological site (road from Kamari – pathways).

The city was inhabitable for more than thousand years and was the administrative and religious centre of the city–state of Thera, which was consisted of six more set tlements. The city met a particular construction development during the Hellenistic period, a time when Thera was conquered by the dynasty of Ptolemaios, King of Egypt because of its strategic position in the Aegean. From the 3rd century A.C. the city is being gradually abandoned and in the early Christian times the city is no longer at its peak, but it is still inhabitable. In the 8th century the city offers settler to the residents of the seaport settlements from the Arabs’ invasions, where they started knocking up settlers among the ruined buildings of the city with construction materials from the ancient buildings.

Even if the continuous inhabitancy ruined the majority of the remains of the early periods, the city was excavated in great extent by German scientists under Hiller von Gaertringen (1896-1902) supervision and gives a complete picture of its shape and organization during the Hellenistic and Roman period, while the number of the inscriptions and mobile findings discovered in the city and in its cemeteries – many of them are exhibits in the Archaeological Museum of Fira – are the main source of information for the island’s history in ancient times.

The city which is built 320 meters above sea level has a central road that runs through it (North/Northwest-Southeast) and holds the elongate line of the hill. Its core develops in consecutive embankments on the smoother east side while the ends and the steep points of the line host mostly worship places. The construction of strong footholds the one after the other and the frequent use of the offered rock manifest the efforts of the people to tame the inclined and rocky of its soil while the numerous underground wells, testify the solution that people had found to store water.

Public buildings, markets, stores, theatre, baths, districts with private residences, temples, sacred places and one complete road network with sewerage system constitutes the city’s picture, in which austere architectural figures prevail. The “Market of Gods” in the south side was the most important place of worship, where the sacred of Apollo Karneios, the God of Dorieis, predominated in the religious life of Thera and numerous inscriptions on the rocks preserve the most ancient pieces of the Greek Alphabet in the Aegean.

The importance of the archaeological site which had been abandoned for decades due to the lack of credits, was forced the 21st Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities to create the project “Configuration and Emergence of the Archeological Site of Ancient Thera”, which was included in the Peripheral Corporate Program (PCP) of South Aegean 2000-2006 and was co-sponsored from European Union by 75% and from the Greek State by 25%. Having already fulfilled a great part of its targets in the fields of the emergence and protection of the monuments as well as in the configuration of the site, the primary task of the project in 2007 is to organize the site, to inform its visitors and create the infrastructure basis for the services of the visitors.

As the visitors walk through the cobbled streets of the ancient city among buildings that are usually very high, they can realize its shape and its organization, know its monuments and feel the life of its residents, enjoying at the same time the magnificent view to the Aegean.

Santorini - a “window” for volcanology

The Santorini group of islands is unique as it is probably the only volcano in the world with its caldera in the sea. All of Santorini’s islands were formed largely due to the volcanic activity and constitute a compound volcano.

Twelve huge explosions occurred, one every 20.000 years approximately, during the last period of volcanism. Each violent explosion caused the collapse of the volcano’s central part and the creation of a large crater (caldera). The volcano however managed to recreate itself over and over again.

The last large explosion occurred 3.600 years ago (during the Minoan Age) when the igneous material (mainly ash, pumice and lava stones) covered the three islands (Thera, Thirasia and Aspronisi) together with a thriving prehistoric civilization, evidence of which was found during the excavations of Akrotiri in Thera. The huge amount of new matter did not only create stretches of flat fertile land, but it is also responsible for the formation of the well-known external beaches. The solid material and gases emerging from the volcano’s interior created a big “vacuum” underneath. This caused the collapse of the central part and the creation of an enormous “pot” - the today’s Caldera - with a size of 8x4 km and a depth of up to 400 m below the sea level.

Following this explosion, the volcanic activity continued through time with slower pace, building two islets inside the Caldera – the Palea (Old) and Nea (New) Kameni. The latter is the newest land in the Mediterranean as it was formed by lava between 434 and 57 years ago. The round craters, hot fumaroles, new minerals, and gushing warm multi-coloured water, impress visitors. The collapse of the central part of the volcano created the Caldera’s slopes and cliffs, “gremna” as local called them, and it is possible for visitors to take a tour by sea within the “internal” part – the offspring of the active volcano. In this way one may come close to the volcano and get a very realistic picture of its slopes, which stretch in a total length of 25 km and reach a height of 100-300 m above the sea level, acquiring a better understanding of its development and the way in which the volcano acted. The variety of rocks, the alternation of their colours, the way in which they relate to each other and the details of the volcanic shaping are all extremely impressive. The natural light that falls on the slopes is different each moment of the day and offers unique views throughout the year.

The view from the sea is made complete thanks to various routes in land, close to the caldera rim. In addition, some of the natural cross-sections and the old quarries on the two larger islands (Thera and Thirasia) offer the opportunity for observation, consolidation and finally the delight of experiencing a wide range of geological structures and forms. Finally, the panoramic view from various points at the top of the caldera helps the imagination to comprehend the phenomena and simplify the historic evolution of the volcanic events on the two Kameni islands.

It is clear that a huge natural geological-volcanological museum has been created in Santorini, ideal for observing the structural formation and development of a classic volcano, easy to explore and providing an alluring invitation into the world of volcanology. It offers for free a colored, three-dimensional open “window” which is accessible not only to specialists but to all visitors of the island.
